The Silbo Gomero whistle would sound really cool in music

Più che un’affermazione è un tabù: la bellezza, qualche volta, può essere un fardello. Lei, Catrinel Marlon, si guarda bene dal dirlo. Nata atleta (è tradizione di famiglia), le passerelle sono state la strada per emanciparsi dalla provincia rumena – la città di Iasi, nella Romania moldava - e scoprire la città. Volto di Armani, ambassador per Chopard, ne La Gomera – L’isola dei fischi di Corneliu Porumboiu (in sala dal 27 febbraio), Catrinel è una femme fatale coinvolta in un intrigo hitchcockiano a base di fischi, segreti e doppi giochi sotto al sole delle Canarie. Ma per arrivare fin qui l’attrice ha affrontato un viaggio molto lungo, iniziato cinque anni fa con una telefonata, proseguito attraverso Parigi e Cannes, speranze e illusioni, film svaniti nel nulla e provini saltati. Perché – succede anche questo – Catrinel è troppo bella. Troppo bella per recitare senza soffrire (almeno un po’). Come è arrivata sul set di Porumboiu? Tutto è iniziato con una telefonata di una vecchia conoscenza, Cristian Mungiu. Siamo originari della stessa città e da bambini eravamo i due giovani talenti locali: io una campionessa di atletica, lui un regista. Poi le nostre strade si sono separate, lui ha lasciato la Romania e io ho cominciato a lavorare nella moda. Insomma: cinque anni fa Mungiu mi chiama e mi invita a Cannes. Altre volte mi avevano offerto di andare al festival, pagata per indossare gioielli o vestiti, ma avevo sempre rifiutato. Non volevo bruciarmi l’esperienza. Lui, che quell’anno a Cannes era in giuria, insistette moltissimo. Disse che voleva parlarmi di un progetto. Allora sono andata. E com’è andata? Ci siamo incontrati sulla croisette, ero emozionata ma anche incerta, perché non lo vedevo da anni e non sapevo più che faccia avesse. Lui, per il nostro appuntamento, mi aveva chiesto tre cose: non truccarmi, non mettere i tacchi e non portare macchine fotografiche. Abbiamo proseguito insieme fino al Palais e da là al suo ufficio. “Bussa”, mi disse. E ad aprirmi la porta si presentò Steven Spielberg: “Welcome Catrinel ”. Mi sentii svenire. Ricordo che Nicole Kidman si tolse le scarpe per presentarsi, non voleva essere più alta di me. Mungiu quel giorno mi regalò un sogno. Sì, ma il progetto? Il film? A fine giornata disse che ero troppo bella per il film che stava scrivendo. E che parlavo rumeno con accento italiano. Ci sono rimasta male. Per tre anni è sparito. Poi finalmente mi ha richiamata, per avvertirmi che aveva fatto il mio nome a Corneliu Porumboiu e che sarei stata contattata da lui. È andata così? Sì, ma quando mi ha chiamata Corneliu io ero in Francia, a girare con Abdellatif Kechiche. Declinai l’offerta. Poi, a giugno, Luca Barbareschi, che era il mio compagno in Mektoub, my love: Intermezzo, abbandonò il set. Kechiche si mise alla ricerca di un altro attore ma nessuno sembrava compatibile con me. E così a ottobre è scaduto il mio contratto, mi hanno pagata e rimandata a casa. Nel frattempo avevo detto di no non solo a Porumboiu ma anche a Gabriele Salvatores, per un ruolo piccolo ne Il ragazzo invisibile 2. Venivo da un anno in cui mi ero rotta la gamba sciando, e a quel punto ero davvero giù di morale. Ho pensato di smettere. Allora ho fatto una pazzia. Ho richiamato Porumboiu, anche se sapevo che il film era partito. E invece no. Il film non era iniziato proprio perché non trovava la protagonista. Sono saltata su un aereo e mi sono precipitata al casting. Il provino è durato tre giorni. Nel film parla il silbo, una lingua fischiata. È stato difficile impararla? Una tortura. Credevo che i fischi fossero doppiati, invece Porumboiu ha assunto un insegnante che per cinque mesi, a Bucarest, ci ha allenato otto ore al giorno. Il silbo è una lingua protetta dall’UNESCO, la parlano in pochissimi. Ricordo la bocca sempre umida, gli sputi, la frustrazione e l’imbarazzo tra di noi mentre provavamo. Le dita, che usavamo per modulare i suoni, ci procuravano lividi sul volto. Lo scottex con cui ci asciugavamo le labbra ci feriva. Un inferno. E la difficoltà non era tanto nel fischiare, quanto nel riformulare il suono dentro la testa. Nel film è una femme fatale. A chi si è ispirata? Hitchcock. Non a caso il mio personaggio si chiama Gilda. Ho cercato la sua eleganza. Qualcosa che, da ex sportiva, riesco a modulare bene attraverso il corpo. Come sceglie oggi i copioni? Venendo dalla moda ho sempre cercato di fare un salto di qualità, anche se mi offrono spesso ruoli da bella ragazza con la maglietta bagnata. Tutte commedie. Ho sempre rifiutato. Vorrei essere scelta per quello che so fare, non per la mia bellezza. E nemmeno perché sono straniera. Ho iniziato in Italia otto anni fa con La città ideale di Luigi Lo Cascio e vorrei continuare così, con il cinema d’autore.

Wahnsinn. Awesome. I liked it very much. A very special island. We spend there last two weeks and I'm amazed! People are so nice, beautiful landscapes and the forest... Carpyyyyyy. What's whistling anyway. Great job. Cinematography is getting even better. Really good work framing the majority of the scenes.

Beautiful island. Were there last year, this brings back memories

I love when i pet agreat white shark its so cute. Straight off, this movie is totally different to what you may be used when thinking about Romanian movies. Starting with the story, the cast (Catrinel Marlon is magnificent) the scenery, smart humor and hidden little gems (references to various famous scenes in other movies) this film makes you think you're watching more of a Hollywood movie than a Romanian one, although, as a downside, I must say certain characters seem to be portrayed a bit simplistic.
The story is, to some extent, a typical police one, but the twist of using the whistling language from Gomera Island enriches the plot all around as it unfolds.
I really liked the movie and I would be happy if it sets the new trend in Romanian Cinema.
